Clearing out a playroom the kids have outgrown

A children's playroom with blue shelves of books and toys, a small table and chairs, and floor cushions

To clear a playroom the kids have outgrown, let each child pick a few keepers first, then pull the batteries out of ride-on cars and electronic toys. Offer clean, complete toys in good shape to friends, schools or a donation center. A crew can then haul the play kitchen, shelving, bins, tables and everything else in one visit.

A playroom changes faster than any other room in the house. The play kitchen gets used every day for three years and then not at all. The train table turns into a place to stack laundry. A ride-on car sits in the garage with a dead battery. Then one day the kids want the room for gaming, homework or a teenager's hangout, and everything in it needs to go somewhere. This post covers the order that makes it manageable and what our crew takes away.

Let the kids choose first

Before anything gets bagged, give each child a short window to choose what stays. A small number of keepers works better than an open question. Three or four favorite things each is easy to decide, and it keeps a beloved stuffed animal from going out in a bin by mistake.

Then set aside anything with family meaning: a baby's first blocks, a handmade dollhouse, artwork from a toddler year. These are easy to lose inside a toy bin. If the room is turning into a teenager's room or a guest room, our post on clearing a grown kid's old bedroom covers the next stage, and the one on cribs, bunk beds and an outgrown kids' room covers the furniture that usually leaves around the same time.

Pull the batteries before anything leaves

Playrooms hold more batteries than most people expect. Ride-on cars and trucks run on a large rechargeable battery under the seat. Remote control cars, drones, talking toys, light-up wands and kids' tablets carry smaller ones. Pull them out and keep them separate from the rest of the load.

The EPA explains that used household batteries should not go in household trash, and that many rechargeable types can be recycled through drop-off programs. Its page on lithium-ion batteries notes that damaged or crushed packs can start fires, which is why they need to come out of toys before anything is loaded. Most cities across the area take batteries through a household chemical program. Plano residents, for example, can use the city's household chemical collection service. Our guide to what junk removal will and will not take lists the other things that stay behind.

Check the toy chest and the ride-on seat. Toy chests, play kitchen cabinets and the storage under a ride-on car seat collect small things families want back: a lost remote, house keys, a wedding ring a toddler hid, birthday cards with cash still inside. Open every drawer and compartment before the crew carries it out.

What can be passed on

Clean, complete toys in good shape are often welcome. Friends with younger kids, preschools, church nurseries and neighborhood groups usually take more than people expect. Wooden play kitchens, train tables, kids' bookshelves and art easels are sturdy, and a Habitat for Humanity ReStore takes furniture and household goods in good condition, though each location decides what it accepts.

Some toys are harder to pass on. Puzzles and board games with missing pieces, stuffed animals that have been well loved, and plastic toys that are cracked or faded from a sunny window usually go out with the rest of the load. Kids' tablets, game consoles and handheld devices should be signed out of every account and reset before they leave. The EPA's page on electronics donation and recycling recommends passing working devices on and sending the rest to a recycler. If you are clearing more than one room for donation, our post on donating furniture in DFW covers how to plan it.

The big pieces that built the room

Once the small stuff is sorted, what is left is the furniture: a play kitchen, a train table, cube shelves and toy organizers, a kids' table and chairs, bean bags, a small couch or a foam play sofa, a toy chest, a craft easel and stacks of empty plastic bins. Some of these are awkward rather than heavy. A play kitchen with a hutch top rarely fits through a door standing up, and a cube organizer full of fabric bins is wider than it looks.

We handle the carrying and any disassembly needed to get pieces through a doorway. Sturdy pieces in good shape go to local donation partners where they can. It is the same careful work we do carrying furniture out of older Dallas houses and walk-up apartments, and it is how we take a worn kids' couch or patio sectional out of a Little Elm home. If the playroom has spilled into the backyard, our post on hot tubs, sheds and playsets covers swing sets and play structures, and the one on bikes, kayaks and basketball hoops covers the garage.

What we haul from a playroom

On a typical playroom pickup, we take:

  • play kitchens, workbenches, dollhouses and train tables
  • cube shelves, toy organizers, bookcases and toy chests
  • kids' tables and chairs, bean bags and small couches
  • ride-on cars and trucks with the battery removed
  • outgrown toys, stuffed animals, puzzles and board games
  • art easels, foam play mats and tunnels
  • empty bins, baskets and packaging

What stays behind: loose batteries and anything from the chemical shelf, like old craft paint or glue. Those go to your city's program. Where the rest goes after we load it is covered in where your junk goes after pickup. Our stated goal is to keep more than half of every load out of the landfill.

How the pickup runs

Send us a photo of the room, and mention anything awkward, like a play kitchen with a hutch, a large train table, or a ride-on car stored in the garage. Tell us if the room is upstairs. A crew looks at what you have and gives you a firm number before anything is loaded. The quote is the bill, and disposal is included. We are affordable and priced fair, based on how much there is to take.

You point, we carry, we sweep. These are our own crews, not gig labor. Call before noon and same afternoon is typical across the northern suburbs, the same way we handle whole-room junk removal for families in The Colony. When the keepers are set aside, tell us what needs to go, or read how our furniture removal works for the bigger pieces.

Frequently asked questions

Do you take ride-on cars and Power Wheels?

Yes. Ride-on cars and trucks come out with the rest of the room. Pull the battery first and take it to your city's household chemical or battery drop-off program.

Can you take a play kitchen that will not fit through the door?

Yes. When a piece needs to come apart to clear a doorway or a stairway, the crew takes it apart and carries it out.

What should I do with toys that are still in good shape?

Offer clean, complete toys to friends, preschools, church nurseries or a donation center. Broken toys and games with missing pieces can go on our truck with the rest of the load.

Do you take stuffed animals and foam play mats?

Yes. Soft toys, foam mats, tunnels and bean bags all come out with the rest of the room.

Can you clear the room while the kids are at school?

Often, yes. Set aside the keepers, mark them clearly, and tell us how the crew gets in. We will confirm the plan and the price before anything is loaded.

Let the kids pick their keepers, pull the batteries, pass on what another family will use, and let the crew carry the rest. Then the room is ready for whatever comes next.
