Clearing out a house after a divorce or separation goes best in a set order. Get written agreement on what each person keeps, let each person wipe their own phones and computers, and set aside papers with financial details. Once that is settled, a crew can remove the furniture, boxes and garage items nobody is taking in one visit.
A split usually leaves a house with three piles: what one person takes, what the other person takes, and a much bigger pile that neither wants. The bed nobody wants to sleep in anymore, the sectional that will not fit in an apartment, the garage full of shared projects, the guest room that was really a storage room. This post is about that third pile, and how to clear it without adding another argument to a hard season.
Settle what is being divided before anything leaves
The one rule that matters most: nothing goes on a truck until both people agree it can go. If the property is still being divided, the safest move is to put the agreement in writing, even if it is a short list in a text message that both people answer.
If you have an attorney, ask them before you clear anything of real value. If you are handling the divorce yourself, the Texas State Law Library keeps a plain-language guide to divorce in Texas that covers the terms and the process. We are not lawyers, and we do not decide who owns what. Our job starts after that question is answered.
A simple way to run it: each person walks the house with a roll of colored tape and marks what they are keeping. Anything with no tape after an agreed date is on the haul list. Photograph each room before and after, so there is a clear record of what was there.
Phones, laptops and the shared computer
Old phones, the family laptop, tablets, a desktop in the office and a game console all hold photos, messages, saved passwords and account logins. In a split, those devices need extra care, because two people may have used the same one.
The FTC's guide on removing your personal information before you get rid of a phone walks through the steps: back up what you want, sign out of accounts, take out the SIM and memory cards, and restore factory settings. Each person should copy their own photos and files first, then wipe the device together or agree who does it.
Once a device is wiped, the EPA's page on electronics donation and recycling recommends passing working pieces on and sending the rest to a certified recycler. Monitors, printers, speakers and the drawer of old chargers can go on our truck with the furniture. Our guide to appliance and electronics disposal in North Texas covers the larger pieces.
Pull the paperwork before the furniture goes. Desks, filing cabinets and nightstand drawers tend to hold bank statements, tax returns, insurance papers and old checkbooks. Go through every drawer, keep what either person needs for the divorce, and shred the rest rather than letting it leave in a box.
The furniture nobody is keeping
This is usually the biggest part of the job. The bedroom set, the dining table, the living room sectional, the recliner, the bunk beds from when the kids were small. Some of it is in good shape and some of it is worn through.
Clean, sturdy pieces may suit a donation center like a Habitat for Humanity ReStore, which takes furniture and household goods in good condition, though each location sets its own rules. Our guide to donating furniture in DFW explains how donation centers tend to decide.
Mattresses are the piece most people want gone first. Our guide to mattress disposal in DFW covers your options, and we can take an old mattress and box spring out of a Carrollton bedroom or anywhere else we work. Big couches are the next hardest. If the sectional has to come apart to get through the door, the crew handles that, whether it is an old sofa leaving a house in Carrollton or one across town.
What we haul after a split
On a typical pickup like this, we take:
- beds, frames, headboards, mattresses and box springs
- couches, sectionals, recliners and chairs
- dining tables, dressers, desks and bookshelves
- old TVs, monitors and wiped electronics
- washers, dryers, spare fridges and freezers
- garage items: shelving, tools nobody is taking, bikes and yard equipment
- boxes of clothes, bedding, kitchen items and decorations
The closet is often the slowest part, and our closet cleanout guide covers clothes and soft goods. If there are shelves of books and boxes of old files, our post on boxes of books, bookcases and old paperwork picks up there. For anything we cannot take, such as paint, pool chemicals or motor oil, see what junk removal will and will not take. Those go to your city's household chemical collection program, not on our truck.
If the house is being sold, our post on what to clear before listing photos covers the next step. If one person is staying in the house, clearing the third pile is often what makes it feel like a fresh start. We do this work across the area, including clearing a whole house in Carrollton and the rest of the northern suburbs.
Where it goes after we load it: usable items go to local donation partners, metal goes to recyclers, and our stated goal is to keep more than half of every load out of the landfill.
How the pickup runs
Send us a photo of the rooms and the items that are going. Tell us if either person needs to be there, and who the crew should take direction from on the day. If only one of you can be present, have the agreed list ready so there is no question about what leaves.
A crew looks at what you have and gives you a firm number before anything is loaded. The quote is the bill, and disposal is included. We are affordable and priced fair, based on how much there is to take. You point, we carry, we sweep. These are our own crews, not gig labor.
Call before noon and same afternoon is typical across the northern suburbs. When the list is agreed, tell us what needs to go, or read more about how our furniture removal works for the bigger pieces.
Frequently asked questions
Can you remove items from a house during a divorce?
Yes, once both people agree on what goes. We do not decide who owns what, so have a written list ready before the crew arrives, and check with your attorney if property is still being divided.
Does my ex need to be there for the pickup?
No. One person can meet the crew as long as the haul list is agreed. Tell us ahead of time who the crew should take direction from on the day.
What should we do with shared phones and computers?
Each person copies their own files first, then the device is signed out of every account and restored to factory settings. After that it can be recycled or go on our truck.
Can the furniture be donated?
Sometimes, if it is clean and sturdy. Usable pieces go to local donation partners when they can, and the rest is disposed of responsibly.
Can you clear the whole house in one visit?
On most homes, yes. Send photos of each room so the crew comes ready, and we will give you a firm quote before anything is loaded.
Agree on the list, set the day, and let the crew do the carrying. The house can feel like a fresh start sooner than you expect.
